About the Fairgrounds

In 1905, people came by covered wagon, Conestoga wagon, surreys, and horseback to gather at the first fair held in Calhan’s little country schoolyard—a thanksgiving festival held by the farmers to celebrate a bountiful potato harvest. The celebration was simple, then—a potato and bean bake, joyful, improvised entertainment, and horse races! Since that simple gathering, the El Paso County Fair has grown in size and scope, and the Fairgrounds along with it. The Fairgrounds now encompasses a quarter-mile dirt track for horse and car races, rodeo arena, grandstand with seating for 2000, outdoor pavilion, and four (4) exhibit buildings.
